Training → Brent Mandatory → The Professional Role of the Foster Carer

Caring for a child of a different ethnicity (ETHNbrent)

Description
[This course will take you about 1hr 40mins to complete.]

This course is for foster carers who are looking after a child with a different ethnic background, or who might do so in the future. It looks at the role ethnicity might play in a child's identity, and how you can honour, support and celebrate that part of them.

Note: While there are, of course, instances of foster carers from minority ethnic backgrounds caring for white children, this is not the main focus of this course. However, many of the same principles still apply. Topics such as supporting a child’s identity and culture, and recognising and responding to discrimination, are likely to be equally relevant.

You will learn about:
- What ethnicity is, and how it might inform identity.
- The importance of developing a strong sense of self in a foster child.
- Practical considerations, such as health, hair and skincare, food, clothing, religion and traditions.
- How to challenge discrimination, racism and stereotyping.
- How to celebrate diversity.
